between the past and the future is NOW

To be torn between incoherent opposites; to be lost in the expectations of today’s world; to be living with a constant uncertainty of life – this is the conditio humana of the contemporary human being. In the search for the meaning of all this, we turn towards collective dogmas that promise to give us something to hold on to. Caught between traditional and cultural heritage on one side and the constant search for some alternatives and freedom, we lose orientation – and our identity – in the challenges of everyday. Our loneliness remains unquenched. And so, it’s easy to fall victim to stultification and group pressure: religion, social media, politics, ideologies, mass culture.
In my artistic debate with contemporary myths, I start with the Christian symbolism that shapes the European culture. I try to re-define the ubiquity of the figure of Christ. I deconstruct the imagery of Jesus in the bigger context of European cultural roots in order to re-frame the questions of our individual and collective identity:
How can we find our place between sacrum and profanum, given the destruction and suffering of the contemporary world? How can we think our mythologies anew? Where does our search for myths that are adequate for now and the future lead?
My answer to these questions is the way of abstraction: where fixed definitions and frameworks dissolve, leaving space for new ways of interpretation. Here, the individual is given space to breathe. In this process, the human being is given an opportunity to discover their individual identity anew and to search for their own creation myths – a chance to express and connect with the eternal rhythms of nature.
What awaits you in this exhibition is a rich palette of sculptures, objects, and paintings that connect human-made materials like concrete and metal with natural driftwood forms and transformative processes of oxidation.
